The 99 Butterflies are based on 99 passages that Maggie Nelson calls "propositions". Flying out of autobiography texts based on autotheory, the filmed butterflies break away from the linear, two-dimensional logic of the narrative and move towards a more indeterminate, surreal articulation. I made and designed the blue costumes and most of the props in the performance, and in some episodes invited the participating artists to express themselves in their own way, which is a more spiritual, natural state of things that I sought in this practice. This is an ongoing creation, of which a few butterflies are shown here.
